Admission is solely through Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE). The programme has a total number of 58 seats for both Development Studies and English Studies streams; each stream will have 29 seats. Allocations of seats to individual stream will be made based on the choice of stream preference of the candidate and availability of seats under each discipline.

PwD reservations @ 5% will be followed as per GoI norms. PwD candidates will consume seats from their individual category pool. During the seat allocation process, e-mail or phone queries regarding the status of vacant seats will NOT be entertained. All the information regarding seat allotment shall be published on the official HSEE - 2022 website.
i) For choosing the order of stream preference, a candidate should login to the portal (https://hsee.iitm.ac.in) with the HSEE - 2022 registered Email address and password.
ii) There is no additional fee for choice filling.
iii) A 5-days window will be enabled for filling the choice of streams. During this period, each qualified candidate must fill the two choices carefully. Any request for change of stream preference will not be entertained.
Seat allocation will be made based on the All India Rank (merit order) / category reservation in each stream as per the seat availability.
i) Provisional allotment will be made based on the filing of choice by the candidate.
ii) The Candidate has to download the "Provisional Seat Allocation Letter" from the HSEE - 2022 Portal.
iii) Seat Acceptance has to be confirmed on or before the last date/time specified in the provisional seat allocation letter.
The Qualifying exam for the candidate can be any one of the exams as listed in HSEE - 2022 Information Brochure. Candidates belonging to the General, GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL category must secure a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination. Candidates belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories must secure a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination. Where only letter grades are mentioned in the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of joining. In case the candidate does not provide such a certificate, the decision of the HSEE admission committee regarding his/her eligibility shall be final.

* SC/ST and PwD students are exempted from payment of tuition fees of Rs. 3,000/- per semester irrespective of the parental income.

The fee structure for subsequent semesters will be made available at the time of admission.
Every qualified candidate will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed format that will be made available along with the letter of offer of admission. Candidates will be admitted only if they are physically fit for pursuing a course of study at the Institute.
